Type of Loft Conversion:
Dormer – 1 bed en-suite
Duration of Build:
If you’re looking for elegant loft ideas, look no further than this recent loft conversion in Muswell Hill. Living in a top floor flat, our client was keen to extend into the attic, creating more living space. Our homeowner’s style aspirations were to develop a stylish retreat that reflected the home’s period personality.
"The dressing table snuggled into the middle of my new bedroom I thought was a great idea. I never would have thought of that."
Constructing a Dormer extension – a large, rectangular-shaped extension with horizontal ceiling and vertical walls – allowed us to create a beautiful new master bedroom and en suite bathroom.
The design-led space makes clever use of all the loft angles. A charming alcove built into the conversion’s front pediment provides the perfect spot for a dressing table and vanity area. While a bank of fitted wardrobes provides plenty of storage without detracting from the room’s clean lines.
The beauty of loft conversions is that they often carve out nooks for wall niches; cut-out areas in the wall that can be turned into room features.
In this project, two long niches framing the double bed add a decorative element. Our client used the niches to display flowers but they can also be used to highlight artwork, framed photos, or favourite objects.
Our client wanted to harness as much as light as possible. As well as positioning large twin Velux rooflights in the roof, we installed floor-to-ceiling French doors. These let in copious light and make an attractive interior feature. The addition of a Juliet balcony enhances safety without detracting from the view.
Alongside a master bedroom, we built a new shower room. The bathroom provides a pampering, private space just for our client. Alongside convenience (no more traipsing down the hall to the bathroom!) the addition of a luxurious en suite will also boost the flat’s value when our client comes to sell.
The final flourish for this chic conversion was decorating it in a pale palette. In keeping with the character of the original flat, a traditional staircase with turned spindles and newel posts was added.
The new loft space doubled the size of our homeowner’s accommodation, giving her extra space she wanted, and a sound investment for the future.
According to Nationwide, a loft conversion can add 20% value to your property. Find out how much a loft conversion would cost you here.
