Dormer – 1 bed, 1 bath
10 weeks
Our client wanted to free up more space so that he could work from home regularly. He decided to invest in a full-width Dormer loft conversion, creating the space he needed right now while also investing in his home for the future. The full-scale loft conversion would also allow him to create a comfy new home office.
"A full-width dormer was the ideal solution for our homeowner’s 1930s period home as it comfortably fits the size and scale of property, without taking away any of its charm, and gives the homeowner masses of extra space to play with."
Darren Project Manager
Rear full-width dormers, as the name suggests, extend from one side of the property to the other. The dormer extension is built into the existing sloping roof and has a flat roof, giving the new loft rooms classic high ceilings.
Alongside adding lots of extra space – usually room for a master bedroom and bathroom – the dormer’s generous proportions allow full-height fixtures to be installed. For example, with this conversion, we fitted floor-to-ceiling French doors with a glass Juliet balcony. The expanse of glass opens the room up and gives amazing views of outside.
A further benefit of a full-width dormer is that it adds ample living space without detracting from the property’s appearance at the front. This preserves the overall look of the home, which is especially important if you live in an area, such as our client’s, with older, characterful properties.
To make sure the dormer extension blends in, the dormer roof is built to match the existing roofline, aligning it with adjoining homes. A further ‘camouflaging’ step is applying a cladding finish that matches the home’s original finish. With our client’s property – a period 1930s home – the dormer was finished with red tiles to match the existing roof tiles. Installing similar style and size windows also help maintain the home’s symmetry. The result is a beautiful loft extension that enhances rather that jars with its surroundings.
The new loft room comprises a large master bedroom and en suite. The combination of double Velux rooflights and French doors with side lights flood the bedroom with light. Built-in wardrobes customised to fit the eaves keep the space calm and clutter free.
A couple of steps from the bedroom is a luxurious, marble-clad en suite featuring floor-to-ceiling marble tiles. The combination of glass walk-in shower, white bathroom units and chrome fittings create a serene sanctuary built for relaxation.
As with all our loft conversions, a coordinating, full-size staircase was built connecting the new loft rooms to the rest of the home. To complete the elegant new space, walls were decorated in light grey and plush carpeting laid throughout.
