Hackney, East London, E1 6

Type of Loft Conversion:

Rear Dormer – 1 bed en-suite

Duration of Build:

8 weeks

Background:

Our client sought a loft conversion for her Hackney home for two reasons – to create extra living space and as a sound financial investment to optimise her property value.

The home’s original design – a pretty, period one-bedroom flat – simply lacked space. The aim was to provide our client with her dream master bedroom, a spacious, botanical-inspired space with storage galore.

"We not only aimed to add as much square footage as possible, making use of every inch to create a light, bright and airy space, but one that’s sympathetic to the home’s age and character. We think we’ve done just that. "

To meet planning requirements, we constructed a rear Dormer loft conversion with a slight inset. This means that the Dormer extension sits flush with the roof ridge, rather than projecting above it. As well as keeping the roofline consistent with the neighbours, this type of conversion adds masses of space, allowing us to construct a spacious master bedroom and en suite.

The new loft extension really opens the space and, despite being a new addition, exudes period charm.

Our loft designers and builders worked hard to create a sympathetic conversion that tied perfectly with the original property. Starting with the entrance way, we constructed an antique pine wooden staircase leading up to the new loft space. Painted timber architraves paired with Victorian style doors and ceramic doorknobs also inject warmth and character into the space.

Upon entering the bedroom, you’re immediately struck by how light and airy the conversion is. A combination of twin Velux rooflights and full-length French Doors let copious amounts of light in. The addition of a metal balcony with fine railings also maximises natural light.

The built-in wardrobes, which provide lots of storage space, were constructed in a traditional shaker style. The recessed panel doors have timeless appeal, enhancing the room’s heritage feel.

Completing the new layout is a beautiful new en suite. Featuring a corner shower and Victorian style sanitary ware, it’s the perfect addition. Striking green geometric floor tiles give the petite space a splash of art deco decadence.

We pride ourselves on a turnkey finish and take care of all internal finishes, including plastering, decorating, and tiling – enabling you to enjoy your new loft straight away. The final phase of this conversion involved painting woodwork a crisp white and walls a rich botanical green. The result is a simple, soothing nature-inspired retreat.
