This L shaped dormer loft conversion in Hackney E5 was designed to give the homeowners a much more useful top floor without extending the property at ground level. The brief was to create a flexible family space with a dedicated lounge area, a generous bathroom and a separate den for the children.
The property had the right roof shape and rear addition to suit an L shaped dormer design. By extending across both sections of the roof, Absolute Lofts was able to create a larger and more practical layout than a standard rear dormer would usually allow.
The aim was not just to add floor space, but to make the home work better day to day. The new loft gives the family separate areas for adults and children, while keeping the main living areas below less crowded and more flexible.

The completed L shaped dormer loft conversion has transformed the upper level of this Hackney home into a proper family floor. Instead of creating a single bedroom suite, the layout was planned around several useful spaces, giving the homeowners a lounge area, bathroom and children’s den within the new loft.
The main loft living room benefits from the extra width and depth created by the L shaped dormer. This design works particularly well on period terrace homes with a rear addition, because it allows the main roof and outrigger roof to be used together. The result is a room that feels open and usable rather than narrow or broken up.
Natural light was an important part of the design. Roof windows and full height doors help brighten the new floor, while the Juliet balcony gives the lounge area a more open feel. This makes the loft work as a comfortable everyday space, not just an occasional room at the top of the house.
