Background:
Our homeowner, who lives in a new build block of flats in Poplar, East London, wanted to expand his current accommodation with a loft conversion. As this would increase the size of the existing flat, planning permission would need to be obtained from the local authority beforehand.
Our homeowner’s vision was to create a characterful, comfortable living space perfectly equipped for modern living.
"“The exposed brick wall makes such a powerful statement, a really cool place to live.”"
Graham, Property Owner
After obtaining relevant permissions, our team constructed an impressive front and rear pitched roof Dormer loft conversion. The new loft structure essentially doubled the size and value of the existing flat, adding a spacious new master bedroom, en suite, and a separate home office.
To inject character, we incorporated many of the flat’s original materials into the build. Large swathes of the existing exposed red brickwork were made into striking feature walls, giving an industrial vibe to the otherwise contemporary interior. Real wood flooring peppered with dents also adds natural charm to the space.
Feeding in natural light was also an important element of this loft extension. Large feature windows let copious amount of daylight into the bedroom, while Velux windows in the en suite and office keep the space light and airy.
Although the renovation ripples with character, the new space has all the life-enhancing features needed for modern living. The new en suite features a stylish new shower enclosure and vanity unit, along with extra touches such as heated towel rail and flooring.
With more people switching to homeworking, transforming dead loft space into a private home office is the ideal solution. Our client was keen to develop a home study to work comfortably without interruptions. As such, we created a separate office space with ample room for a large desk, chair and bookcase. The pivot roof window allows plenty of light and air to circulate. A low loft cupboard snuck into the eaves provides handy extra storage. To keep the main bedroom clear and clutter-free, a bank of bespoke built-in wardrobes were fitted in the eaves. With space for everything, from clothes to bulky items, this keeps clutter out of sight, and the bedroom a serene, peaceful sanctuary.
Completing the refurbishment is a new staircase leading from the original flat. Here we crafted a traditional style staircase, deftly linking the new floor with the existing. Our client was thrilled with the new space and how we weaved old-world charm into a new build apartment.
