This Hackney E9 rear dormer loft conversion created a new bedroom and en suite above the existing home, giving the family more breathing space without extending at ground level. For a mid terrace property, a rear dormer is often one of the most practical ways to increase headroom, improve floor area and make the loft work as a proper room.
The new bedroom was designed to feel bright, open and comfortable. Floor to ceiling aluminium doors bring strong natural light into the room, while the frameless glass Juliet balcony helps the space feel more open. This was important to the client, who wanted the new bedroom to feel airy rather than enclosed.
Storage was built carefully into the layout. Wardrobes were fitted into the eaves to make use of lower areas that would otherwise be difficult to furnish, while additional low level cupboards help keep everyday items out of sight. This makes the bedroom more practical and leaves the main floor area clear for furniture.
The en suite bathroom was designed with both space and style in mind. A glass shower enclosure, wall mounted toilet and carefully planned fittings help the room feel open, while the separate bathroom window and rooflight bring in daylight and ventilation.
The finish gives the bathroom a strong Art Deco feel, with emerald green and gold details, a countertop basin, marble floor tiles and feature brassware. These choices make the en suite feel more special while still working as a practical bathroom for everyday family use.
Externally, the dormer was finished with smooth grey tiles so it sits neatly with the surrounding properties. The aim was to add a useful new floor inside the home while keeping the rear roof extension visually balanced from outside.
