Rear Dormer – 1 bedroom with en suite
8 weeks
This rear dormer loft conversion in Hackney was designed to create a calm new bedroom suite within a period property. The homeowner wanted more usable space, better storage and a finish that felt carefully connected to the character of the original home.
The brief was to form a bright master bedroom with a botanical feel, built in wardrobes and a compact en suite bathroom. The finished loft includes green feature walls, roof windows, traditional detailing and carefully planned storage, creating a peaceful top floor bedroom that feels both practical and personal.
"The aim was to add as much useful space as possible while keeping the new loft sympathetic to the age and character of the property. The green bedroom, shaker style wardrobes, timber details and compact en suite all help the finished space feel like a natural part of the home rather than a separate modern addition."
Ian, Project Leader
This Hackney rear dormer loft conversion increased the usable floor area of the home while keeping the new structure in proportion with the existing roof. The dormer gave the bedroom and en suite enough headroom and floor space to work properly as a comfortable private suite.
The bedroom was planned around a calm green colour palette, with roof windows bringing daylight into the sloping section of the room. Full height doors and a slim Juliet balcony help the bedroom feel more open, while the soft furnishings and botanical styling give the space a relaxed, lived in feel.
Storage was an important part of the design. Rather than relying on loose furniture, the wardrobes were built into the room in a traditional shaker style. This makes better use of the available wall space and keeps the bedroom practical without making it feel crowded.
The en suite bathroom was kept compact but carefully finished. A walk in shower, basin and green patterned floor tiles continue the colour theme from the bedroom, while the simple white wall tiling helps the room feel clean, bright and easy to maintain.
Traditional details were used throughout the project to help the new loft sit comfortably within the older property. Timber doors, painted woodwork, classic architraves and ceramic style door furniture all help soften the join between the original home and the new loft space.
Absolute Lofts managed the project as a complete design and build service, from the main loft structure through to plastering, decorating, fitted storage, tiling and final finishes. The result is a project-specific example of how a rear dormer can create a useful bedroom and en suite without losing the feel of the existing home.
