Mansard — two bedrooms and one bathroom added
12 weeks
Our clients wanted to make better use of their two-bedroom top-floor flat in Abbey Wood. A mansard conversion offered room for two more bedrooms and a bathroom, giving them extra living space while staying in the home they knew. Because this was a flat, the proposed roof alteration needed careful design and planning approval before work could begin.
"This Abbeywood loft conversion is a great example of the extra amount of space you can get, doubling what was there before. It also shows how you can preserve the heritage of a building by using traditional materials and design features."
Absolute Lofts Project Manager
Over a 12-week build, the mansard created a new floor above the existing flat. The finished space includes a split-level main bedroom, a second bedroom and a bathroom. The extra rooms changed how the whole flat could be used, rather than simply adding one large room in the roof.
The main bedroom has space for a double bed as well as a walk-in wardrobe and dressing area. Open shelving and enclosed storage keep clothes and everyday items organised without filling the room with separate furniture. The second bedroom gives the owners another useful room that can adapt as their needs change.
The new bathroom combines an egg-shaped freestanding bath and a rainfall shower with natural stone tiling and gold-coloured brassware. Traditional-style windows and cast-iron radiators help the new rooms sit comfortably alongside the flat’s period features.
The staircase matters just as much as the rooms it reaches. Here, a Victorian-style stair, wood panelling and parquet flooring make the route to the loft feel like part of the original home. These details give the new floor a consistent finish from the landing through to the bedrooms and bathroom.
This project shows what a top-floor flat can gain when the roof shape, layout and approvals are considered together. The same arrangement will not suit every flat.
