L-shaped mansard creating two bedrooms, one bathroom and a private roof terrace
12 weeks
The owners of this first-floor flat on Aldren Road needed their home to provide more space for their growing family. Their priority was to create two additional bedrooms, but they also wanted the new loft floor to have a direct connection with outside space.
The design needed to make effective use of the property’s existing first-floor layout while creating an entirely new level of practical accommodation above it. The roof terrace was therefore planned as an integral part of the conversion rather than being treated as an optional decorative feature.
An L-shaped mansard conversion provided the floor area required for two large bedrooms, a bathroom and the private terrace the family had requested.
"“An outside terrace is a great feature for any home, but to have one direct from your bedroom is really cool and makes for something quite uncommon.”"
Tony, Project Leader
The completed L-shaped mansard gave this Aldren Road first-floor flat an entirely new level of accommodation containing two large bedrooms, one bathroom and a private roof terrace.
One of the bedrooms was designed with direct access to the terrace through French doors. This created a strong connection between the internal room and the new outside area, giving the family an unusual feature that would have been difficult to achieve within the existing flat.
A satin-glass balustrade was installed beside the French doors as part of the terrace arrangement. Its translucent finish provided a degree of screening while still allowing natural light to reach the bedroom. Glazed sliding doors and fitted wardrobes completed the internal room, providing useful storage without unnecessarily reducing the available floor area.
The second bedroom gave the growing family another substantial room within the new floor. Creating two bedrooms instead of one oversized principal suite allowed the conversion to solve the household’s immediate requirement for additional family accommodation.
The terrace was incorporated into the layout from the beginning and provided outside space directly from the loft floor. This made it a practical extension of the adjoining bedroom rather than a feature disconnected from the way the family intended to use the property.
Absolute Lofts completed the project in approximately 12 weeks. The finished conversion gave the owners two additional bedrooms, another bathroom and the direct outside access they had specifically requested, while making effective use of the property’s position as a first-floor flat.
