This Woolwich SE18 project transformed an underused loft space into two bright bedrooms for growing children, along with a modern shower room. Designed for a busy family home, the new layout provides practical separation, privacy, and long term flexibility without the need to move.
Woolwich, South East London, SE18
Hip to Gable Loft Conversion, 2 bedrooms, 1 shower room
8 weeks
The homeowners in Woolwich approached Absolute Lofts because their growing family had reached the point where the existing layout no longer worked comfortably. With children getting older and needing their own bedrooms, the house was starting to feel restricted, but moving out of SE18 was never the preferred option.
Like many families in Woolwich, they wanted to stay close to local schools, transport links and the wider community they had already built around them. Relocating would have meant significantly higher costs once stamp duty, legal fees and moving expenses were added, making a loft conversion the far more practical long-term investment.
Their semi-detached property already had strong loft potential, and after our initial survey it became clear that a hip to gable loft conversion would create the additional full-height space needed to make the project worthwhile. By extending the sloping side roof into a full vertical gable wall and combining this with a rear dormer, we were able to design two generous new bedrooms along with a modern shower room.
The brief was not simply to add rooms, but to create a practical family layout that would improve the way the entire house functioned day to day. The goal was to give both children proper bedrooms of their own, while also improving privacy and freeing up the lower floors for better family living.
Careful attention was also given to natural light, storage and staircase positioning so the new floor would feel like a natural continuation of the home rather than an added extra. Roof windows and rear-facing dormer windows helped maximise brightness throughout the loft, while built-in storage within the eaves ensured no usable space was wasted.
You can see similar completed projects across our Woolwich loft conversion projects, where families choose to improve rather than move and create valuable extra living space within the homes they already love.
The finished design was planned to deliver genuine long-term value, not just extra square footage, giving the family a better layout, stronger future flexibility and a home that worked properly for modern family life.
